Obituary - Mr A. D. Asher
"Mr Albert Daniel Asher, a popular figure in the Northern Southland District for many years, died recently. Born at Dunedin on August 30, 1877, he was a son of William and Jessie Asher, who came to New Zealand in 1861.
Mr Asher received his education at Moray Place School and Arthur Street School, Dunedin. After leaving school he worked on his brother's farm. He later worked with his father in a men's outfitters and tailors' establishment in Dunedin before purchasing the general store at Balfour.
Mr Asher was of a quiet disposition and did not take a great interest in outside affairs. Two of his favourite pastimes were draughts and gardening.
Mr Asher went to Balfour in 1903, the year of the great snow, when mens' beards were frozen with frost from walking from the hotel to the shop. In those days a family grocer could perform many kindnesses, unnoticed then, but remembered long after.
Mr Asher was married at Lovell's Flat on April 21, 1905, to Helen Robson, who predeceased him. He is survived by a son, William, and a daughter, Mabel (Mrs Healy). He was predeceased by a son, Robert, who died at the age of eight".
